A citizenship by descent application is usually more straightforward when the parent’s Australian citizenship is clearly documented and the birth relationship is supported by official records. It can take longer where names have changed, records from different countries do not match, or older documents are difficult to confirm.

If the applicant is a child, the application is usually lodged by a responsible parent or guardian. If the applicant is an adult, the applicant usually lodges in their own name. Either way, the application needs to match the identity documents exactly, including full names, dates of birth and place of birth.

Names that do not match across documents cause frequent delays. This includes spelling differences, different surname formats, married names, informal name changes and transliteration differences between alphabets. If records are inconsistent, the Department may ask for formal change of name documents or other records that explain the differences.

Citizenship evidence for the parent is sometimes weaker than people expect. An old passport, an expired passport or a statement from family members may not be enough by itself if there is no clear citizenship certificate, birth record or other official evidence showing the parent’s Australian citizenship.

Keeping contact details current is a basic but important step.

People sometimes assume that any Australian-related application automatically gives travel or stay rights. Citizenship by descent is a citizenship process, not a visa grant process. If a person is also dealing with visa status, it is important not to assume a bridging visa carries the same rights as the substantive one, especially for travel, work or return to Australia.

Another common issue is relying on unofficial checklists from social media or community groups. Those sources can be helpful for examples, but they are not a substitute for the Department’s current document requirements. Application requirements can change, especially for identity verification and online lodgement steps.
