Medical exams, police certificates and translations are often the costs people only discover after they start a visa application. These are usually separate from the Department charge and separate from the migration agent’s professional fee. They also vary a lot by country, provider and how quickly the documents are needed.

Police certificate costs depend on where the check is issued. Australian checks are usually ordered from the Australian Federal Police or, in some cases, a state or territory body where relevant. Overseas police certificates depend on the rules of that country, and those rules can differ a lot.

Translation charges are usually based on the number of words, the number of pages, the type of document and the turnaround time. Birth certificates and marriage certificates are often relatively simple. Court records, military records and detailed civil registry extracts can cost more because they are longer or more technical.

Not every translation on the internet will be acceptable for every purpose. The exact standards depend on where the document is used and who is asking for it. The practical point on cost is simple: if a quote includes "translations excluded", that can mean a very small extra amount for one document, or a large extra amount for a family with many civil and identity records.

為什麼這些費用不應加價#

The Migration Agents Code of Conduct requires clear disclosure of the fee structure in the written agreement, s46, and invoices and receipts, s49. If money is held on behalf of a client, the client account rules may also matter, s50. Money must not be taken before a written agreement is in place, s51.

In practice, this means disbursements should be shown separately from the agent’s professional fee. If there is an administrative charge for arranging a service, that should be identified clearly so it can be compared. A bundled total with no breakdown makes it harder to tell what is agent income and what is a third-party pass-through cost.

A proper quote is not just a number. It should show the professional fee, the likely disbursements and the stage at which each cost may arise. Registered migration agents must give a consumer guide before, or as soon as practicable after, starting services, s38, and they must use a written agreement, s42.

When reading the quote, look for phrases such as "excluded", "payable directly", "estimate only" and "subject to provider pricing". These are normal for medicals, police checks and translations because the actual amount can change with provider, country and timing.

If someone is providing immigration assistance in Australia, registration status matters. Giving immigration assistance while unregistered can breach the Migration Act 1958 s280, and charging for it can raise issues under s281. If a person is formally appointed to deal with the Department, that is usually recorded on Form 956 under s312A.

Documents also need care. False or misleading documents can create serious problems under the Migration Act, including s234, s245AR and Public Interest Criterion 4020. That is not just a cost issue, but it is relevant because cheap unofficial documents or poor translations can become expensive if they have to be replaced later.
